Have you ever pondered including a little bit more than simply your current article content? Come on, man, what you may express is extremely important and most. Still imagine in case you added in some terrific images or perhaps video clips to provide your current posts extra, “pop”! Your articles is great but having graphics in addition to video clips, this web site may well indisputably be one of the most useful with their subject. Outstanding blog site!

What do you need? A Blog or a Forum?

Planning to develop a community around your  business (website) to address different  issues  or keep the users updated  about new product releases or to engage the users to help each other!  What is the best possible solution that you may look for!!! A forum or a  blog?

A forum serves a lot of purposes:

    • The users can interact between themselves and with the owner
    • A lot of product or service related problems are solved in this process and the forum acts as an extended version of FAQ page.
    • It suggests a lot of transparency in the business process and wins user’s faith easily that ultimately transfers into business
    • A forum can retain the existing users as well as it can fetch a lot of new visitors who in future may turn into users
    • There is nothing like a forum to understand user’s trend and it offers a lot of suggestions for upgrading your product

A good blog serves a lot of purposes too:

    • A blog can provide latest product updates
    • Can create a great reader as well as user base
    • Can uphold the brand identity of the company
    • Pulls a lot of organic visitors who can be directed to the original site
    • Helps to keep the website in the news always
    • A blog is a better way for successful social communication
    • And a lot more

A forum offers a three way communication [user <-> user <-> Service Provider] where as a blog offers a two way communication [Author <-> User]. In a blog, you can control the directions of issues but in forum it is often impossible. The list may move on and on and on. What do you think?

…last week the UN Committee on Science and Technology announced that only governments would be able to sit on a working group set up to examine improvements to the IGF—one of the Internet’s most important discussion forums. This move has been condemned by the Internet Governance Caucus, the Internet Society (ISOC), the International Chamber of Commerce and numerous other organizations—who have published a joint letter (PDF) and launched an online petition to mobilize opposition.

Learn from Spammers – Content Writing Tips #1

How do you feel if you get such comments in your blog post / article?

My business is really thankful for the author with this post to make this lovely and informative article live in charge of us. We really appreciate your effort. Sustain the great work. . . .

    Or this:

Kudos for posting such a useful weblog. Your blog isn’t only informative but also very artistic too. There tend to be very handful of individuals who can write not simple articles that creatively. Maintain the excellent writing!!

    Or this:

When I visit a blog, chances are that I see that the construction is poor and the writing bad. On the other hand, I could honestly say that you writing is decent and your website solid.

Experienced bloggers will immediately identify these as spam comments. They will trash these comments in no time. Fresh bloggers may find these cool and keep them published. All depends on the chance factor.
However, I really find them amazing… Especially from a content writer’s point of view.
Let’s analyze some salient features of all these spammy comments and find out some traits of good content:

    1. General: None of these comments say anything specific to the blog posts where the comments were posted. Do you do the same when writing an article? If your answer is yes, you and the website owner got a problem. Do not write if you do not have something substantial to write about. Otherwise, we would not have called them spam comments.
    2. Make the reader happy: Everybody loves to be praised. All these comments are doing just that – making the blogger happy for writing article so that the spammer gets a chance to stay in the comment thread. Does your article make the readers happy? Do you spend those extra moments or offer something extra to motivate the reader to take an action or to make them happy?
    3. Address directly: All these comments are directly addressing the author / blogger. This is one of the most important aspects of web content writing. You do not know the reader but you must communicate in such a way that you are interacting with a reader. And this applies to every reader of your article.

People say spammers are smart. What do you say about content writers?
Last but not the least: here is another example:

What did you do, just say whatever it is you wanted to make people mad?! You can’t just say something like that and not give any backup for it! You’ve got to at least give me a reason to suppose that you know what you’re talking about; otherwise, you just sound like some kid with a grudge!

Just look how the spammer is challenging the blogger. If the blogger takes it personally and replies, the comment stays :D ..

And sometimes the system goes wrong and you publish something like this:

Youre so cool! I dont {suppose|think Ive read anything like this before. So good|nice|great|awesome|useful to find somebody with some original thoughts on this subject. thanks|realy thank you|thank you|appreciate for starting this up. this blog|site|website is something that is needed on the web, someone with a little originality. good|nice|great|awesome|useful job for bringing something new to the internet!

This may happen with any content publisher working on some content spinner to generate bulk content.

    • Debleena 5:57 pm on 16/12/2010 Permalink | Reply

This is again another angle to content writing. In fact I have seen many people grimacing when I said that I am a content writer (talking of employers)….so I guess this attitude is because of the general level of writing…..I have been through a situation where I had to spin good write ups and make them really bad (in fact “bad” is an understatement). Why is it that a writer from “Times Of India” is seen with respect and a content writer is pushed to “general” category? Yes, these inhibitions are not born from nowhere…..most of the content writers in various SEO companies produce content which is not even readable….they just write, stuff and publish….so this bulk content producing procedure definitely justifies the categorization….I have been in the web industry for the last two years and have learnt to design my content to some extent (though still I am learning)….so this post is kinda telling us that writing must make sense and more so must communicate….so u need to become a good reader to become a good writer……it is time we set a trend (for all web writers)…..it was great to read this….

Webtionary – Dictionary of web terms

Thinkernet: Thinkers communicating in the Internet. Used as a noun. They have a voice to say something.
Netizen: People whose virtual identities are real and real identities are virtual.
Freemium: Selling premium things for free. People say that it is the only business model that can survive in the web. Example: Skype
Blogosphere: Contrary to earth’s atmosphere, it is an internetospheric level inhabited by bloggers. However, due to over expansions of social media networks like FaceBook, and industries like “make money online” this layer is affected badly.
Widget: It is like a pocket that people use in their blog sidebar. As you keep phonebooks in your pocket, bloggers keep facebook friends there.
Tags: How do you define different parts of your body? Ooops – you just tag something as ‘hand’ ‘mouth’… you may even tag your friends with @friends-name
Hyperlink: it is not like hyper tension. It is a link to another website or web page. But a link from RipOffReport may cause much tension.
PDA: it is not public display of affection but a Personal Digital Assistant (often have a touch factor)
KISS: This not an instruction to be performed by lips but an instruction to ‘Keep It Simple – Stupid’ or ‘Keep it Short & Simple’
Google: though it is a brand name, it is commonly used as a synonym for “search”. E.G. yoo… just google it.
Crawler: Spiders crawl net and crawlers crawl websites.
Robot or ‘bot’ : It is not a machine that will do your day to day task. It is a few line of code that gets into your website and reads your data with / without your permission. or the term ‘bot’ might also mean a piece of code that works on its own logic automatically. E.g.: a Google talk bot, that replies automatically when talked to.
nOOb: Someone who is not only an absolute newbie to something, but also makes fool of him/herself, acting without grasping the whole idea.
Facepalm: If someone gives you that on the web, know for sure that you made a Boo Boo. :P
Emoticon: Emoticon sounds like emotion? Yes it is is a set of keyboard characters that are combined to show a facial expression. :P
FFA: This is not an organisation. It denotes “Free for all”. These are web pages that collect links to other websites.
Hit Counter: Well this is not a list of musical chart-busters or number of hits you have taken on the face! In fact Hit Counter is a program that counts how many times a web page is loaded.
TLD: Definitely this is not any new television channel. It means “Top Level Domain”. Examples of TLDs are .com, .net, .org, .edu, .gov.
Archie: ‘Archie’ – singular for “Archies”? No. It refers to a computer program to locate files on public FTP servers.
Newsgroup: This is not a group of news readers or a news house! It refers to online discussion group with a collection of articles and user-created posts relating to a particular topic.

WOwww…Jus had in mind another amazing term: ChartJunk. ChartJunk refers to all those illustartive designs in charts and graphs. However this has nothing to do with information about the graphs/charts. It is just a visual bliss. Since it’s all “all non-data-ink or redundant data-ink”, its known as ChartJunk.

Here is one for the time being, but not the end:
Instapaper: Do you think it is another specimen of paper of black and white or colored ink? Of course not! It is a tool which helps you to save web pages which you want to read later. It provides you with a Read Later bookmarking button that postpones your reading for the time being. If you have any other important work to attend to, Instapaper can be of great help!:-)

Youtube Trueview video ads – Must Watch!!!

When everybody is talking about permission marketing – Google is going for traditional interruption marketing (advertisements shown in TV, Radio – where the user does not have any choice but to watch / listen to an advertisement) with the TrueView advertisements at Youtube.

Ok, here is a difference – you can skip the advertisement – but only after 5 seconds. 5 Seconds!!! Hell – thats a lot of time to lose a visitor. Any seasoned webmaster knows the price of those opening 5 seconds.

Google normally does not try to do that – they have always acted like ‘content is the prime focus in a page’ and did not allow more than 3 AdSense ad units in a page. Google is not a traditional content producer like Yahoo. It depends on content produced by others to run the search engine. So, why?

There are 2 types of advertisements now under TrueView – Instream and InSlate.

The Instream advertisement will grab your 5 opening seconds and the InSlate advertisement will be played at regular commercial interval. Oops .. Google copying from traditional media – even the terms!!

You must agree that it is not “Google like”. – Is Google hacked? :D

By the way – people watch YouTube because it is cool. It does not force you to take commercial breaks. People even watch advertisements on youtube because they are good. People love Youtube for the freedom to watch whatever they want to and without interruption.

What is drying up there @ Google?

Knowing KR personally I always expect him to come up with informative posts and inputs worth a thought. Very nice insight on a latest Google-trend. Google being a market leader, has always been under the scanner, and IT enthusiasts, as well as IT firms are always eager to follow their footsteps when it comes to strategizing. Changing the pattern of advertising to what they have taken up is ‘unGoogle’ like. This is probablythrows up a debate open between the traditional marketing gurus, and the nonconformists. Since people at the helm in Google are brilliant strategists, it would be interesting to see how things progress on this front with ProGoogle folks and otherwise, locking horns with facts and figures.
Will keep an eye here to find out whats cooking more around Googleplex and other interesting areas..
      Cheers.

Permission marketing always comes with a priviledge and there are no reservations….it makes the audience feel good! But as you wrote, the feel good factor is missing…again it s the same old “commercial” phenomenon…WTF….actually very few companies can have the gust to do permission marketing…so obvoiusly this ‘True View Ads’ sucks!!!

    • Ipsita 9:54 am on 04/12/2010 Permalink | Reply

Its really like forceful marketing but i guess like Debleena suggested very few companies have the guts. But somehow like mentioned the whole concept of Youtube being ‘cool’ is a lost cause.

    • Jayanta 6:36 pm on 04/12/2010 Permalink | Reply

Google is such a giant company….they should have the guts to do permission marketing. But they are looking to make more money. Certainly the Google appeal is drying up.

    • saikat 12:49 am on 05/12/2010 Permalink | Reply

But YouTube will still remain ‘COOL’ – as long as it says “Broadcast Yourself’ :D

    • Shilpa Srivastava 7:42 pm on 05/12/2010 Permalink | Reply

Well Google has been always there with its tricks :) . A compilation of news from different sources and Google names it their own as Google news. They come up with the preview feature which prompts the readers to be there on their site rather than visiting the concerned site; thus deviating from their basic concept which says they want users to spend less time on Google and more on the sites that come up in the search results. So Google has always been with something ‘different’. Point is we have accepted it and would continue to do so since we hardly have any choice other than accepting the tantrums of the search giant. Debatable point?

      • kamanashish 3:00 pm on 06/12/2010 Permalink | Reply

It is important to have competitors for the end-user’s benefit. Here we do not have much.
And another point is – producing content is an expansive affair for web publishers. What about Google?

    Tips on Online Branding

In offline market a brand is realized by impressions. However, the Point of Impressions are limited to TV, Newspaper, Hoardings etc .. But on web there are innumerable point of impressions … There are hundreds of websites in a single niche where a visitor can get in touch with your brand (under construction).

Finding a niche is nice but the “niche” poses many problems for online branding too. For example, having an account at Flickr is both good and bad for a photographer’s brand identity development. Because Flickr is like an aquarium and there are millions of other fishes in it. It is really tough to grab unique attention in such a crowded place. It is like having thousands of tee shirt brands in one store (good for buyers) and no advertisement allowed.

At the same time when you live in isolation (personal website / blog) you are missing the brand value and user volume of Flickr. And if you do not have a website, people will not take you seriously.

So how to go about developing an online brand (example – a photographer)?

You need to find out less crowded places and verticals to promote your brand apart from staying at Flickr. For example, a photographer may create a cool slideshow (storyboard + photographs) / videos etc and publish them at places, where there are everyone else but photographers – e.g. slideshare.net. You need to find out nodes, who will connect you to hundreds of other people. For example: do something that smashingmagazine.com will publish.

Now, here are more niches. For example, if you want to catch the online business community and get freelance photography projects from them, try to get yourself covered by powerful people in that community e.g. Seth Godin / Guy Kawasaki.

One must develop as many point of impressions as possible… Doing more partnerships and highlighting your achievements by “others” may help :D

Or do something crazy / funny / stupid (must go along your brand identity) that people will share via social networks.

Once people start seeing you at different places – you know what you earn – brand value…

    • Debleena 10:03 am on 02/12/2010 Permalink | Reply

The term “brand management” arouses a lot of inhibitions to many. I come across many PDFs and Google books on “online branding strategy”….but I do never find interesting solutions because there are none….being in the spotlight needs guts! I read one very interesting quote “Throw away all your business strategies, join in the chaos!”…..in fact Seth Godin talk about making a lot of meaningful noise…..So it is all about being different….and that you have already said! Loved your thought! Let me try out something crazzzy!

A few days back at IIM Ahmedabad, we met a person who planted more than 10,000 trees in Gujrat without being part of any NGO. We do not remember his name but his action is undoubtedly inspiring.

We all have similar plans – we all understand the importance of planting trees. But we often forget to take action since we have so many other things to do in a day to day life.

So, now we have set a reminder for us:

For every new client (irrespective of size), we will plant a tree in Kolkata. Period.

Great initiative. I was searching about carbon footprint and here is what I found at http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/google/4217055/Two-Google-searches-produce-same-CO2-as-boiling-a-kettle.html

“Making two internet searches through Google produces about the same amount of carbon dioxide as boiling a kettle, it has been estimated.”

“According to Gartner, an American research firm, IT now causes about two per cent of global CO2 emissions and its carbon footprint exceeded that of the world’s aviation industry for the first time in 2007.

Dr Alex Wissner-Gross, a physicist from Harvard University who is leading research into the subject, has estimated that browsing a basic website generates about 0.02g of CO2 for every second it is viewed.”

Best of luck for identifying the responsibility …

The forward slashes at the beginning of internet addresses have long annoyed net users and now the man behind them has apologised for using them. Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the World Wide Web, has confessed that the // in a web address were actually “unnecessary”. He told the Times newspaper that he could easily have designed URLs not to have the forward slashes. “There you go, it seemed like a good idea at the time,” he said. He admitted that when he devised the web, almost 20 years ago, he had no idea that the forward slashes in every web address would cause “so much hassle”. His light-hearted apology even had a green angle as he accepted that having to add // to every address had wasted time, printing and paper.

Once you have the option to make a single group your landing page at Twitter, you will start following thousands of people just to increase your network. And at the same time, you will start developing a list to follow (new home page). And you are not the only one. All smart twitter users will start doing so.

        So what?

But that I can do now also – I just don’t take a look at my timeline, I go to my list and visit the channels.

And if, that happens, I think spammers will try to get listed on your list instead of being followed :)
